Amplifiers Power Ratings And The Selection Of Speakers

Many times, speakers fail; the voice coil overheats and burns, it may even catch fire. In most scenarios, the main cause for this damage is usually the overpowering of speakers. However, warranties do not include this type of damage.

Predominant causes of speaker failure

1. When the amplifier’s power output exceeds the speaker’s power-handling capacity, the voice coil becomes charred and distorted.

2. Distortions that arise from overworking a low-powered amplifier. Clipping occurs, burning the tweeters due to high frequency created.

It is therefore important to understand the relationship between speakers and amplifiers ratings so as to escape the above mentioned catastrophes.

Quick fixes to the risk factors of speaker

  • Overpowering the speakers

This is the case whereby the amps power rating is bigger than what the speaker can handle. This is a common phenomenon in DJ applications whereby the system produces hard bass responses. An attempt to get more bass leads to clipping. The relationship between amplifiers power rating and speaker power rating should not be confused for a linear function. Some people choose a speaker with a power rating that seems to coincide with that of the amplifier: this is wrong because the speaker will be underpowered. A 1200w amplifier must not essentially match with a 1200w-rated speaker.

Solution
In a sound system where the amplifiers are high-rated, choose a speaker program with more than twice the power of the amplifiers. So, for our example of a 1200w amplifier, the corresponding speaker should have a rating of between 2400w and 4800w. The 4800w would provide the best protection

  • Distortions

This is occurs when an amplifier’s power rating is too low to radiate the desired sound volume. When someone tries to get a higher volume, clipping occurs. Excessive distortions can also emanate from other amplifier connections.

Solution

In order to prevent this kind of damage, ensure that the power rating of the amplifier system can suffice the sound system application, that is, the amplifier should give sufficient volume without being coerced to some imbalance.
