Understanding the basic principles of car amplifiers

A car amplifier plays a significant role of boosting the stereo, the speakers or any other audio input in a car. A factory set-up car amp is good but the installation of an external power amp makes the audio performance much better. Normally, a car stereo amplifier is small due to the limitation of dashboard space. If you want to enhance your car audio by incorporating subwoofers, you will require an additional amplifier in order to empower the subs. An amplifier acts as a clean source of power for the speakers.

Basics

The selection, purchase, and mounting of car amplifiers can sometimes be a hard task especially if one does not understand the tenets of amplifiers. There are various types of amplifiers like the single channel amps that are used in single speaker systems and five channels that amplify a complex car audio. You can find car amps from many sources like market, online retails, audio shops and stores, and electronic shops. These electronic devices are very technical and need a certain level of intellectual capacity use them. Their installation shouldn’t be undermined because if mounted wrongly, the whole audio system might come to a collapse or even damage the car itself.
Reasons for adding external amps

The main reasons are:

  • To empower large speakers or added subwoofers
  • To expand the audio quality
  • To replace an in-dash amp that has been spoilt
  • To boost audio features such as auxiliary inputs and equalizers of a car stereo

Power-raised Speakers

Built-in speakers have their own amps but music lovers often hike the audio by adding after-market speakers. These additional speakers tend to have greater audio than factory-built speakers hence the need for external amps to supply the increased power demand.

An amp steps up the power signals of an audio. In lay man’s terms, an amp converts low output power from a stereo or any audio player to high power signal in the subwoofers or speakers.  Generally speaking, external amplifiers, as compared to built-in amplifiers, are more powerful.
